Blackhawks re-sign forward Joey Anderson

Amid the bigger name free-agent signings, the Blackhawks are also reportedly bringing back forward Joey Anderson.

The team confirmed Monday afternoon:

Although the Blackhawks did not sign Anderson before their exclusive negotiating rights to the forward expired, Scott Powers with The Athletic reported that the two camps were still trying to work out a deal as of Monday morning:

And by early afternoon, the depth forward had signed a two-year contract to keep him in Chicago:

Anderson, who just turned 26 in June, was originally drafted by the New Jersey Devils in 2016 (third round) and was acquired by the Blackhawks from the Maple Leafs in February 2023 as a part of the Jake McCabe and Sam Lafferty trade. He finished that season with four goals and two assists in 24 games for the Blackhawks, and spent some time on the Rockford IceHogs playoff roster. His performance earned Anderson a one-year contract with the Blackhawks and, although he didn’t make the team out of training camp, injuries to several forwards — including Andreas Athanasiou and Taylor Hall — allowed Anderson an opportunity in the NHL and he impressed again. He remained with the Blackhawks for 55 games in a middle-six role, registering 17 points (5 G, 12 A) in that span.

With several other forward signings today, Anderson is likely going to have to battle for a roster spot in Chicago. If he doesn’t make the team, he’ll be a great veteran addition to the Rockford IceHogs, who will be having an influx of young prospects to the team this upcoming season.
